Our Requirements

Be a man at least 21 years of age.

Believe in a supreme being. People from all religious backgrounds are welcome

Have high morals. This is the most important quality to have as a potential Freemason. Personal integrity, and responsibility are held in high esteem. You must be able to demonstrate that you are a man with good character.

Additional requirements. The Operative Lodge of Dumfries is unique in freemasonry, the membership of our Lodge remains restricted to those who's calling is connected with the building trades, via Masons, Joiner (including woodworkers such as cabinetmakers etc), Plumber, Slater, Plasterer, Lather, Glazier, Heating Engineer, Electrical Engineer, Electrician, Painter, Tile layer, Stone Planner, Quarrymen, Bricklayer and Architect etc. Prospective applicants who have served the recognised period of apprenticeship to any of the above trades shall also be eligible for membership into the Lodge. In accordance with the above, Lewis Masons unfortunaley cannot be considered for admission into the Lodge.

To become a member, just ask.

Traditionally the way of joining Freemasonry is either to be invited by someone who is already a member, or to ask someone you know who is already a member, however in the more modern world this may not be feasible.

So if you don't know someone who's a member just contact us and we can start discussions with you, you may actually be surprised.

Becoming a freemason is not completed in an instant, we will meet with you to get to know you and understand your reasons for wanting to join. We also need to explain more about who and what freemasonry is all about, it is not for everyone.

We are keen to grow our membership but you have to be committed and right for freemasonry as much as freemasonry has to be right for you at the stage in life where you currently are.

Please don't be put off, do contact us so we can get to know you and explain a little more about this great institution and perhaps, pending those discussions you could become a freemason.
